Neurological Rehabilitation

In 2013, I was privileged to have been involved in an amazing process that laid the foundations for the rehabilitation therapy that I am now involved in.

I was approached to provide guidance and support to a young man with a congenital neurological disorder during a year-long movement based rehabilitation therapy. Overseen by neurophysiologist Professor Giselher Schalow, the results showed improvements in posture, muscle tone, coordination and general balance.

It was clear that by repeatedly asking the nervous system to manage highly coordinated movements, neurological improvements were possible. These techniques have shown success in helping to manage a wide range of neurological conditions including;

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Stroke
  • Incomplete spinal cord injury
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • MS (Multiple Sclerosis)
  • ME (Myalgic Encephalopathy) or Chronic Fatigue

At the crux of this process is a device that provides a safe platform for the user to generate highly coordinated movement patterns. All four limbs move together in a specific pattern. The device dictates how the arms, legs and trunk coordinate together, but the body has to provide the stimulus to move – it is this sequence of coordinated movements that encourages the nervous system into adapting and re-organising.
